THINGS TO DOTHINGS TO SEEWALKINGIn addition to the canal towpath walk, linking Odiham Castle to Odiham Common, there are dozens of walks in the surrounding countryside to suit every type of walker – not to mention plenty of pubs along the way. A walking map can be downloaded at: visitodiham.org.ukENJOY THE CANALThe 32 mile Basingstoke canal has been restored for the benefit of walkers, canoeists, boaters, anglers and naturalists. From hiring a canoe to organisinga canal boat trip, walking the towpath, or exploring the Common, our canal wharf offers easy and free car parking.VISIT KING JOHN’S CASTLEOdiham castle is located within a tranquil site adjacent to the Basingstoke Canal. Information boards explain how the site has witnessed and been part of many historical events, from the sealing of the Magna Carta to a French siege.EXPLORE OUR HISTORYOdiham parish has a rich collection of unique historic and listed buildings in three conservation areas – from our beautiful church to oneof the last surviving pest houses. Visitors can find more information at visitodiham.org.ukEAT AND RELAXOf course, you may simply want to relax, rest and enjoy one of our many restaurants, pubs and cafés. Our High Street caters for all tastes and the surrounding area hosts an impressive array of traditional pubs, most of which offer attractive menus.PEST HOUSEThe Odiham pest house dates from the early 1620s and was built in the south west corner of All Saints churchyard. Pest houses, or plague houses, were usually built away from communities on the outskirts of towns to try and isolate the infectious diseases.CEMETERY CHAPELSThe two mortuary chapels were designed by the Winchester architect J. Colson, and cost £1050 to build. The chapels have not been used for many years, but as listed buildings are maintained by the Parish Council, with the last major renovation being done in 2015/2016.HUNTING LODGEThis glorious – almost outrageous – building is believed to have been built in the 1730s to house the gamekeeper employed on the nearby Dogmersfield Estate. It is a private house and lies on the bank of a lake, about 100 yards from a particularly attractive stretch of the Basingstoke Canal.ODIHAM EMBROIDERYDepicting 800 years of local history from the time of Magna Carta to the present day, it reflects the history of England as it was played out in our Parish. This beautiful embroidery can be viewed during the library opening hours at the Bridewell.RAF CHINOOKSOdiham has been the home of the RAF Chinook helicopter force for many years – and is proud to see them flying over our Parish. They make quite a sight and are a welcome part of our community.
